18 dead as truck collides with hummer bus along Owerri-Onitsha expressway

No fewer than 18 people were reportedly killed on Monday, following an accident involving a heavy duty truck and a hummer bus along Owerri-Onitsha expressway, Imo State.

It was gathered that the fatal accident occurred just as the heavy duty truck tried to overtake the hummer bus, killing its 18 passengers including the driver on the spot.

The accident happened at Catering school Junction near Okpokija Junction, in Irete community in the Owerri West Local Government Area of the state.

According to an eyewitness, simply identified as MC T-Boy, the auto crash happened after the truck tried to overtake a commercial hummer bus filled with passengers from Onitsha to Owerri.

“The oncoming heavy duty truck conveying empty containers collided with the hummer bus conveying 18 passengers when it tried to overtake it on the expressway.

“The eighteen passengers on board, plus the driver and the conductor died on the spot as the truck folded the bus.”

Confirming the incident, spokesman of the Imo State Police Command, DSP Andrew Enwerem, warned motorists to drive carefully and be patient along the expressway.
